We live in an interesting time. The world is still trying to find it answers. The current cultural and political climate has drifted into the religious. The tribalism that requires compromise of principles for loyalties has affected everyone. I recently criticized a former “Christian” that has high influence in the conservative movement. I think the new interest of the American people in politics is a great thing and bring further discussion. The issue is that they see politics as a savior of some kind. They are practicing political idolatry. They have placed their trust with a government to save them. This I suspect is the trick of Marxism is to place your faith in the government.
This newly found trust with bureaucracies and agencies has stifled any deep conversation about the role of government. This leaves a shallow group of individuals to bicker and fight for the littlest issues instead of debating worldviews. They are too unintelligent to see presuppositions and to actually analyze them goes beyond their mental capacities. This is where the tribalism comes in to replace any reason for deep thought. The lack of principles on each side makes them just bickering siblings arguing which game to play.
The fight of conservatives and liberals is not because of principles and worldview anymore, but in how to get the same goals through different means. The problem is that it is itself a charade and will eventually reduce to principle and worldview. The Conservatives needs a worldview to ground their principles and need to abandon the worldview they have accepted. That worldview is of the same cloth as the liberals. The atheism or moralistic therapeutic deism they have come to believe.
These problems can arise simply in a “Now-not yet” formula. The liberal is the person that only focuses on the “now”. They need to seize power as quickly as possible and manipulate the system to get their agenda out. That agenda involves plenty of spending and acquiring of unnecessary debt to provide what they call “rights” to everyone. This is why liberals are like Cars, they run out of gas. The conservative focuses on the “not yet”. They don’t need to seize the opportunity and the system will prolong their career. He sees no reason to force his policy through. His policy isn’t so wrong except when it really is just a liberal in conservative clothing. They always think about holding their ground because if they lose it the liberal will seize the opportunity.
The reason they come at this is deeper than simple policy. They are materialist or deist. If all we are is just matter in motion, then the future doesn’t matter much and not even really the present. We have no basis on their foundation to care about either. We have the “now and the not yet”. Christ death has brought about the defeat of Satan. He has lost and yet we are still here. Christianity can reconcile these matters and it is sad to see how many saints turn to look at what the world provides as options. The issue in my mind is that they have nothing to offer and we have Christ.
These liberals and conservatives can’t ground nor provide the principles to continue on without reducing to incoherent autonomous thought. We can reconcile the things they can’t. Why should we not live for today and die tomorrow? Because we are called to do good and are ambassadors for Christ. We have reason to give policies for conserving and providing for future generations. Why should we not wait and only prepare? Why act now? We act now because we are obligated to preach Christ and him risen at all times. We are to be in the world, but not of the world.
