Becoming God?

It is often the case that people butcher metaphors found within the Bible. They read either metaphors literal or they ignore the intended scope. I will be commentating on the hyper-literal Mormon usage. They ought to see what scholars like Cason say on Biblical sonship.

They take Acts 17:29 to mean we are literally the offspring of God. The issue with that interpretation ignores the fact that this text is making a polemical point. He is not agreeing with his pagan audience but criticizing them for their beliefs. Paul is just saying mankind is made in God’s image and that is all. The fact of the matter is God is a timeless, spaceless, immaterial, trinitarian being. God isn’t like the Pagan gods and their idols.

The other text they misused was 2 Peter 1:4. That speaks of us “becoming partakers of the Divine Nature”. I take that to me we will have the moral character of Christ and not that we will become “a god”. That is attached to the statement that follows “having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust”.
