The Cause-Effect Illusion

[responsivevoice_button]

The debate over the idea of causation has crossed the history of human thought.  An atheist once asked me to give my thoughts about an individual that denies the reality of causality. I think the most apparent issue is trying to explain the illusion of change. If cause/effect relations are illusory, then where does our experience of these things arise from? Ironically, what causes us to have such an experience?

The idea seems to be problematic for knowledge because if your thoughts are merely the result of randomness, then we seem to wonder whether our beliefs are reliably formed. It is hard to see how knowledge is possible given such a view.

It also leaves you a reason to suppose that our mind isn’t reliable at all. If cause/effect relations are so basic to our experience and yet they remain illusory. It seems that you are stuck in transcendental idealism where reality is beyond your reach, but you have your experience of it.
