Traditionalist Intuitions

There was a thread on Facebook that I participated in discussing Calvinism. Here is my edited helpful form of a confused conversation: Leighton Flowers: If you redefine human freedom to mean “doing as one desires when those desires are theistically determined,” then sure. But normal people don’t do that. Just Calvinists. Brian Knapp: Leighton Flowers actually no – not all compatibilists are calvinists. And to say “redefine” is to beg the question. And to use the word “normal” as you did is to poison the well. Congrats – you’re 0 for 3. Phillip Jackson: Brian Knapp what poor refutation, my … Continue reading Traditionalist Intuitions

Effectually Caused

26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Most Freewill theists find it a repulsive notion that God “effectually” causes us to make choices. Notice that the conclusion from this passage would be that anyone God causes to walk according to His statutes must be robots and not culpable for their deeds.   Continue reading Effectually Caused

Cranman’s Achilles

This is a sequel to my previous article: http://spirited-tech.com/COG/2019/05/31/traditionalist-and-eisegesis/ Chris Harris shows a major flaw in the position of Leighton Flowers and John Cranman’s interpretation of Romans 9. They believe Calvinists interpretations of Romans 9 require Paul to eisegete the Old Testament. Chris Harris shows that their method of argumentation is hypocritical given the fact they state and apply the same method Calvinist do and then denounce the method when used by a Calvinist. In Romans 9:25, Paul begins quoting the OT and this starts with a quotation from Hosea 2:23 and 1:10. Hosea is writing about the restoration of … Continue reading Cranman’s Achilles

Traditionalist and Eisegesis

Here is a modified conversation between me and Leighton Flowers on the issue of Romans 9: Dr. Leighton Flowers: I am assuming that Paul is not needing to eisegete the Old Testament text so as to support something those texts did not mean in their original context. My interpretation of Romans 9 does not require for the old testament text to be maligned in that way. Paul’s quoting of the old testament text means the same thing in Romans nine as it did in the original text. If someone claims otherwise it’s their burden to prove that. TheSire: “I am assuming … Continue reading Traditionalist and Eisegesis

The Charge of Individualism

It is a common charge that Calvinist have a modern understanding of the Bible. The Biblical writers thought in terms of corporate bodies and federal heads. Calvinism is riddled with 16th-century individualism. Freewill Theist read the Bible historically. These are an interesting charge but the smell of rotting hypocrisy should be filling your nose by now. If you can’t see where the hypocrisy exists, then look no farther than Dr. Thomas Schreiner: Abasciano charges my view with being individualistic and western and claims that his view reflects the culture of the first century. But it seems to me that the … Continue reading The Charge of Individualism

Reviews of Determined to Believe?: The Sovereignty of God, Freedom, Faith, and Human Responsibility

Anti-Calvinist have referred to a work written by Dr. John Lennox. He argues against Calvinism in his book and it seems that Calvinist have responded to him: D. A. Carson: Are Some Determined to Believe the Worst About Reformed Theology? Dr. James Anderson: Determined to Believe? The Sovereignty of God, Freedom, Faith, and Human Responsibility Steve Hays: Determined to Believe? Braxton Hunter on Presuppositionalism and Determinism

I had an exchange with Dr. Braxton Hunter on the issues of determinism, epistemology, and presuppositionalism. Braxton Hunter: no. I’m not saying LFW is intuitive (though it is). I’m saying that it’s intuitive to you that on some level an … Continue reading Braxton Hunter on Presuppositionalism and Determinism

Pelagius meets Marcion

I watched for some awful reason the Soteriology101 podcast and figure I could add a few words. I’m not going to comment on what has already been addressed but to certain comments that weren’t addressed. Flowers starts the podcast by doing damage control to explain why he is talking to Andy Stanley. Of course, he has to mention the fact that Andy Stanley is stuffing cash into his pockets. Leighton goes on to call the opponents of Andy Stanley the “theology police” and by implication states that those that are critical of Andy are not practicing the principle of charity. … Continue reading Pelagius meets Marcion
